Creative Cities

Minds fructify across generations and oceans,
otherwise literature and art and music
would be empty interludes and ornament.
- George MacKay Brown

A previous post speaks about Edinburgh being the City of Literature as appointed by UNESCO. The said city belongs to the Creative Cities Network that UNESCO's Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity established in order to link the cities that make creativity an essential element of their economic development. UNESCO has appointed a number of Cities in the fields of Design, Folk Art, Music and Gastronomy. The Cities of Design are Berlin, Buenos Aires and Montreal. The Cities of Folk Art are Aswan and Santa Fe. The Cities of Music are Bologna, Seville, Oaxaca, and Salvador de Bahia. And finally the City of Gastronomy is Popayan.

I wonder if at least one of the cities of Philippines like Vigan, Baguio, Cebu and Manila would qualify for and be regarded as a City of Folk Art.

I agree that at least one of the Philippine cities you mentioned would qualify as City of Folk Art or Even City of Gastronomy.

As a food-lover, I would like it better if Marrakesh, Morocco made it as City of Gastronomy. It is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site recipient dedicated to food.

Marrakesh really? That's something interesting coz while the other city of gastronomy, Popayan is called the white city, Marrakesh is called the red city. :)

Very interesting. Didn't realize that UNESCO is designating such cities. Are these cities nominated or does UNESCO just pick them based on some criteria?

I think it would be the latter Bill. UNESCO picks the cities based on the criteria that a city uses its creativity in the fields of design, music, etc for its economic development. The process I guess is the same as its designating some place as a World Heritage Site.

By the way... Please go to http://www.natural7wonders.com/ and nominate natural wonders here sa Pilipinas. I bet there are more than 7 which are worthy.

Hey Carlo, I've gone to the site already and I've enjoyed nominating. :)
